Lines of the Land

Some images arrive quietly, not planned, not expected, just waiting to be found. This was one of those moments. I was flying the drone over a field I normally fly over, not searching for anything in particular, simply letting the landscape unfold beneath me. Then the screen lit up with a pattern so striking I stopped mid‑flight.

From above, the land arranged itself into perfect lines, repeating and stretching out with a rhythm that felt almost musical. It didn’t look like a field anymore. It looked like something abstract, something designed, something that belonged more to art than agriculture. I hovered there for a moment, just taking it in, mesmerised by how familiar ground could transform into something so unexpected.

That’s what I love about flying the drone, the chance to see the world in ways the ground never reveals. To stumble upon shapes and textures that only exist when viewed from the sky. I knew instantly I had to capture a still image, and the video from that flight is just as hypnotic.

It’s the kind of photograph that makes you pause and look twice, trying to work out what you’re seeing. And only when you’ve spent time with it, when your eyes have traced the lines and settled into the pattern, does the truth begin to emerge.

These are the first shoots of a potato field, just beginning to break through the soil.
