Where the River Never Rests

March pulled me back to the river, to one of the most determined little characters in our Highland waterways: the dipper. I’ve photographed them many times over the years, but every encounter feels new. They live in a world of constant motion, where the river never pauses and every moment is a battle against the current.

On this day, the waterfall was in full voice, churning and crashing with that early‑spring energy. I watched this dipper work the torrent with absolute confidence, slipping between the surges of water as if the chaos belonged to it. It’s always remarkable how such a small bird can hold its ground in conditions that would knock most creatures off their feet.

The image I captured is a moment of stillness inside the storm, the dipper poised, alert, and completely at home in the rush of the waterfall. The spray, the bubbles, the force of the river all frame the bird in its element. It’s a reminder that wildlife doesn’t always live in calm, golden light. Sometimes it thrives in the roar and the cold and the relentless movement.
