JANUARY 2020
A new dawn
I almost didn’t get the opportunity to witness this stunning sunrise as I forgot to set my alarm clock! But thankfully my friend Chris was sympathetic to my error and very kindly gave me a chance to redeem myself. I was very glad he did as we were treated to some very special light. Conditions were cold and virtually no wind, a rarity in the Cairngorms. It was nice to feel the warmth of the sun on your face as it rose above the mountains.
I had never seen the Belt of Venus at sunrise before, mainly because I am normally in bed! The Belt of Venus or anti twilight arch is an atmospheric phenomenon visible shortly before sunrise or after sunset, with a pinkish glow extending slightly above the horizon and the surrounding area. It was like an other worldly experience with the reflected light on the snow covered hilltops.
