Dunlin probing the sand for food
As the end of August approached, a small group of Dunlins made a timely appearance along the coast, likely having migrated from their summer breeding grounds in Caithness. These fascinating little shorebirds are well known for their distinctive seasonal changes in plumage. In the summer, their breast is adorned with a striking black belly patch, but by winter, this transforms into a completely white breast, leaving only a subtle trace of darker feathers.
Dunlins have an impressive breeding range, nesting solitarily at varying altitudes from sea level to approximately 1000 meters in the Cairngorms. Their adaptability and the dramatic shift in their appearance between seasons make them a captivating subject for any wildlife photographer.
Capturing these moments as they transition from their breeding to wintering grounds offers a glimpse into the remarkable journeys these birds undertake every year. Their presence along the coast serves as a beautiful reminder of the interconnectedness of our natural world.
