Ptarmigan pair enjoying the winter sun

It was one of those rare windless days in the Cairngorms, very cold and when the sun came out provided a welcome respite from the freezing temperatures.  Because of the lack of wind you have to be very careful when trying to get close to the ptarmigan as they will hear every little noise you make while crunching through the snow.  If you spook the female she is off and her partner with her.  Once you have gained their trust and they do not see you as a threat, they relax in your company and you can then sit with them and enjoy watching their behaviour.
